overpriced college board plan

So, I am forced to buy a meal plan. It lets me eat at a cafeteria. The food is lower quality than fast food. Guess how much I pay for each meal?

$9

Even if I only eat some salad. What the fuck.

Outside restaurants and other food providers are not allowed on the college campus because of a contract with the cafeteria company.

There's a large building dedicated to the cafeteria.

What I think they should do, instead, is open up the cafeteria space to private bidders who run restaurants. There is room for about 8 fast food size restaurants there already. The competition would drive prices to a decent level, and there would be much more variety. A food court would be superior in every way to the current cafeteria.

  1. You should just eat raman noodles and stuff off the McDonalds dollar menu man. $9 for crap food is robbery.

  3. My college has something similar; however, you're only forced to buy it if you lived in one of the dorms. Shit sucks, but at least we have stuff like Chilis and Subway on campus as well (which are also partially covered by our meal plan).

  6. What the fuck man, you simply can't subscribe to that meal plan. Just make something that you can easily take with you for lunch or something. :O

  8. My university's meal service was done by a company that also prepares prison food.

  10. WHY do they have to make college so expensive???

  11. I don't even know. My private highschool only cost 10,000 a year.

  12. Prices would almost certainly be more reasonable with a food court, but keep in mind that the college would definitely demand a cut of the profits which would drive the cost of the food up significantly. It would be a similar situation to baseball parks/amusement parks etc. (Little Caesars at Comerica Park charges $20 for a large pizza). It would probably still be better though

  13. I don't think that's how the college in question (or others) do it. I'm pretty sure that Saga gets all the profits. It still benefits the college since they can guarantee catering for all events and also board for all students.

The only direct profit the college would get is rent of the facility, which would probably be minimal.
